OUGD502: Practice Makes Perfect

by Roxxie Blackham on Friday, 11 April 2014

I've become really interested in sign painting and hand-rendered lettering, so have decided as part of my personal professional practice it would be a good idea to practice these skills further in my spare time - this will help to build an online presence and will help with talking about my work when I visit studios.

I've also contacted a few sign painters and letterers for a bit of advice as well as possibly getting involved with workshops over the summer!

My first self practice piece was the following letter F. I've noticed that I always work with script typography when drawing designs, so I thought that I would practise something a bit more detailed within the lettering and use a sans serif font.

It was actually pretty interesting drawing something larger with more detail, as I found out where my weaknesses were within serif lettering - for example I still have a slightly shaky hand so it wasn't perfectly drawn, and making sure that distances and sizes were equal within the serifs was difficult as well! Using a ruler definitely helped with measurements, but I still need a lot of practise when drawing letters at a larger scale!!
