OUGD405: Self Evaluation of 'How To..'

by Roxxie Blackham on Monday 10 December 2012

What role(s) did you take on in the group?
I created the logo for our end product, did a significant amount of research, came up with the idea along with my partner, and also gave design input on the making of the pack of cards. I also cut out the cards, and stuck them together so that they were double sided.

How well do you think you performed in the role(s)?
I think I performed as well as I could in the short amount of time we had to create everything. I was really pleased with the final logo I created and I think it worked well towards the end product design. I'm also pleased with how well the cards looked, even though we had to cut and stick them ourselves rather than printing double-sided.
How well do you think you worked in a group?
I think me and Rinesh worked really well as a group, because we had the same ideas from the beginning and seem to have quite a similar design style. Working in the original group of 5 was proven difficult to do, however, hence the separation.
What were the positives of working in a group?
You can spread the workload out across the rest of the group and give one-another different tasks to do towards the end product. It's also nice to 'bounce' ideas off of each other and use each other's design skills to the full potential.
What were the negatives of working in a group?
When we were in a group of 5, we struggled to come up with ideas that everyone really liked. It's also hard to rely on the rest of your group showing up all the time to do the work set and it's difficult to meet up outside of uni as people in your group may not want to. I also found that the people in my group were easily distracted, so it was a lot easier when we split up and worked in smaller groups as there were less distractions.
What will you do differently next time?
I think that if I were to do this again, I'd like to contribute more to the final designs so that I don't feel like I didn't do as much as I could have, even though I did put a lot of ideas into the final pack of cards, at the end of the day it was Rinesh's hands that created them. I'd also like to be able to get it printed double sided so that we didn't have to spend a whole morning cutting and sticking them together.
Where could you have improved the solution?
We could have printed the final product double sided so that it looked more professional. And we also messed up the box for the cards when creating it, so maybe that could have been made again? Also, if we had managed to work as a team from the beginning, we could have created a lot more to advertise our product - for example posters/flyers and then also maybe an instructions leaflet in the box.
What were the strengths of your presentation?
I think our presentation was good, because we decided to present it in a new and different way - by pretending to be representatives from an organisation, rather than just going through our design process in a boring and bland way. I liked how we managed to get the audience to participate with our product in the presentation, and it got everyone laughing and joining in, which was our intention. I also feel that me and Rinesh spoke extremely confidently, considering our small group size and how nervous we both got before hand.
