OUGD602: Portfolio Surgery With Andy

by Roxxie Blackham on Wednesday 25 February 2015

I had a portfolio surgery with Andy in the second year studio and we chatted for about 40 minutes about my portfolio and where I should take it..

As I didn't have a finished website when I met up with Andy, I took him through my Bechance and asked what he thought should be included in my portfolio.

My feedback from Andy was as follows:

Have a look at the following people:
- Lord Whitney in CF Studios, Leeds
- Polly Williams
- Alison Carmichael
- Peter Horridge

You will need an A3 black, leather-bound portfolio, so consider:
- Page layouts
- Photos
- Back story / finished thing
- Remember to spellcheck!
- Rationale

It would be nice for your personal branding to feel tactile and hand crafted. Your current mark is strong and could be used as a pattern, but make it more colourful so that it reflects your personality. Maybe you could produce a range of business cards with examples of your work on the back, as you have such a variety of design skills?

You could even produce two portfolios - one for your Graphic Design work and one for your Lettering and Signwriting work.

I found the portfolio surgery really useful, as Andy knew quite a lot about designers that I would like and studios that I should be talking to, which was something that I've been really struggling with! I now know a little bit more about the kind of thing I should be looking into and searching for.
