OUGD402: 5 Things That Inspire Me

by Roxxie Blackham

Identify and Explain 5 Things That Inspire You.

My Mum -  I have always looked up to my mum and been really impressed by what she has managed to achieve and do for our family. Another reason why my mum inspires me is because she studies art and has recently qualified as an art teacher. I love all the work she produces, especially when she plays with clay and metal, and I constantly ask her for ideas and input into my work.

Where I Come From - The area I was brought up in is beautiful and constantly inspiring to parts of my work. I also think that all the stories from the part of my childhood which I don't particularly remember (living on site and travelling about in a caravan) have inspired me to be who I am today.

Typographic Artists - I absolutely love drawing typefaces and working with type, so am constantly looking at other artists work to help inspire for my own designs. I really enjoy type that is hand rendered as it gives it an edgier look and makes it more rustic.

Illustrators - I think looking at how illustrators go about designing their work inspires the way I come about ideas and construct pieces. I really enjoy including little illustrations in my final pieces or drawing the whole final piece out.

Artists That Work With Clay, Metal, Paper, etc - I love being "hands on" when producing work and find that a lot of my inspiration comes from my art&craft side of thinking. I think that my final pieces have always been the best when I've got really messy with them and experimented lots with different materials and processes.

OUGD402: 10 Examples of Creative Interest

by Roxxie Blackham

Identify 10 Examples of Design That Illustrate Your Fields of Creative Interest

Jessica Hische - Typographer & Illustrator
I really adore all of the work that Hische produces, she has a very particular style that carries through all of her design work and every single piece she creates is perfect (in my eyes anyway).

Jack Sharples - Graphic Designer, recent graduate

I love the work Jack Sharples created for Sky Arts, and I really like how he creates typography using materials that people would never think of using! I think his way of working has inspired me to use adverse materials and experiment more when creating my designs.

Maurice Sendak - Author & Illustrator
Maurice Sendak was best known for his book Where The Wild Things Are, and I really love his illustrations. I like how playful and imaginative his drawings are and how cute the characters are, yet they still have this creepy and untrustworthy feel about them.

Craig Ward - Graphic Designer and Typographic Artist
I really love all of Ward's work as he really enjoys messing with simple typefaces to see what he can create to convey a message. His work seems to be very experimental and is full of expression and emotion. I love how he experiments with alternative media, like printing on glass and then smashing it to create a great final outcome.

Teagan White - Illustrator & Typographer

I really love all of Taegan White's design work. She uses a variety of media and styles to create her final outcomes and they always look amazing. I also love how messy some of her work is and how you can tell she drew all her designs before going onto the computer to edit them. I think White is a brilliant illustrator and designer!

Matt Ottdall - Graphic Designer & Typographic Artist
I really like Matt Ottdall's retro feel to all of his typographic pieces and how his style is very consistent throughout his design work. I really love the above image, because it's really well executed and aesthetically pleasing. You can tell that he thought about how to create a perfect outcome.

Alberto Seveso - Illustrator & Graphic Designer
I absolutely adore Seveso's work. I love all the colours and shapes he uses and the way it all seems translucent and watery. All his work has texture and an elegant feel to it and it completely draws you in, because of the aesthetics and the colours used all compliment each other.

Russian Propaganda
I really like Russian Propaganda. Ever since studying the Russian Language at school, their propaganda posters have never failed to excite me or inspire me in my design work. I love to use and write in cyrillic and I think knowing how to read and write in Russian gives me an edge.

Artist Books

I absolutely love to create artist books. Above are two images from a book I created for my FMP at college last year. The book was an A-Z list of interesting and different phobias, represented in various types of media, but in subtle and minimalistic ways. I really enjoy making artist books as you have no limits and can experiment with all sorts of materials and processes.

Alberto Giacometti - Sculptor, Painter, Draughtsman and Printmaker
I really like Giacometti's sculpture work. I love the "weird factor" to them and how not one is the same.  They remind me of shadows of humans walking due to the long spindly arms and legs. I think the way he positions their limbs helps add a story and feel of movement to the characters. I really love the materials he uses and how they make the characters imperfect and even stranger than if clay was used.
