OUGD502: Studio Brief 3 Presentations

by Roxxie Blackham on Thursday, 24 April 2014

When it came to designing the logo, we decided that one of the letters should be script and the other one serif or sans-serif to show structure.

Joe put me in charge with designing the D by using a calligraphy pen to make it look hand written.

We then chose our favourite d's from the following bunch of letters and I made them into vectors on Illustrator using the pen tool.

I sent these over to Joe who tried them out with the ü next to them..

Unfortunately the script Ds didn't really work next to the structured u. It looked quite messy and like we were trying to put too many concepts into one design!

We decided on this logo out of all the ideas that Joe had come up with. I really liked this logo as it was simplistic and made us look professional!

Business Cards:

We decided to screen print our business cards, so that we had some cards to give out during the presentation.

Our first few attempts messed up quite a lot and the text was really blurry. When we spoke to the tutor in the print room, she told us that we had used a screen that was too small for the design that we were printing, and that we had to use a flat bed rather than one of the vaccuum beds, so that it would pull through properly.

It took us a lot of attempts to get a set of business cards that were acceptable and where the type wasn't blurry!

We made two business cards for our brand with half of the logo on each card - this was to represent the two heads within the company, so Joe had the black business card and I had the white one. We thought that the white one would work better as my business card, as this meant that I could sketch on it with clients so that they had something personal to take home with them, and to add that hand-rendered touch.

Website:

The website utilises a four column grid system, displaying our most recent projects on the home page in a clear & coherant manner.

 Studio Space:

We wanted our studio space to reflect the branding by sticking to monotone colours. This would make it look professional, as well as making sure that you remember our identity. We also thought that we could place designs around the room in full colour, so that they catch your eye and that you are interested to look at what we've been up to.

Our Presentation:

I really enjoyed this brief as it was interesting to collaborate with someone who designs in such a structured and clean manner, in comparison to my messy and hands on approach to designing. I was really pleased with all of the outcomes, and feel as though our presentation went really well, considering there were only 2 of us working on the project!

Graduate Loans with HSBC

By applying for the maximum loan with HSBC, we can borrow up to £25,000 and pay this back at a monthly cost of £312.91 over 96 months (8 years). This would allow us to start up our business successfully and allow the cost of wages, rent (wifi, heating etc included) and other expenses, such as travel costs and food.

£312.91 seems like a lot of money to pay back per month, but when we thought about the grand scheme of things, if I had one 5 hour job (charging £100 per hour) in the first month of working, we would earn £500 which will pay off the loan cost for that month, with £187.09 left over. This money would be profit and shared between the partnership. For the first two years, we will focus on paying off the loan as well as paying our wages so that we can live. From the third year onwards, we will focus on expanding the company and aim to hire new employees. By year 5 we hope to have a fully working business with 20-30 employees.

We thought that we could defer our first loan repayment for the first 3 months in order to get things going in the business and settle in to the new working environment.

We also thought that we would save up for a couple of years to pay for our start up costs outside of the loan, this means that we might not necessarily have to borrow as much money, due to £5,000 of the costs would already been taken care of! (plus more as we'll aim to save as much as possible over 2-3 years before starting).
