I have recently become really interested in sign painting and lettering, so decided to invest in some cheap enamel paints so that I could give it a go (before buying better paints, in case I didn't like it!)
I came up with a quick design on paper, that I used as a template behind a plastic lid so that I could paint over the sketch..
Because I didn't want to paint on the top of the lid (so the paint won't receive so much wear and tear) I had to work in reverse when painting.
I learnt a lot from doing this - I've learnt that I have a lot of patience and really enjoy sitting down and painting typography. I like the feeling of seeing the final product from the front of the glass and how it looks in context, rather than just on a piece of paper. I also learnt that materials really do make a difference! The pink enamel worked so much better than the cheap white enamel that I bought in hobby craft that just left streaky paint marks on the design.
Since this I have invested in a few colours through one shot enamel paints and have also found a specialist sign painting shop in Shoreditch that I'm going to visit when I'm home for the summer.
