OUGD602: De Designpolitie Studio Visit

by Roxxie Blackham on Friday, 10 April 2015

Joe organised a visit with the studio De Designpolitie in Amsterdam a few weeks before we went out there so that we could talk to a Dutch Graphic Designer and see their work.

The studio was based in the centre of Amsterdam and was really easy to find. Because of being in the centre, however, the studio itself was tiny! But they managed to make so much space out of a small area by adding upstairs mezzanine type areas.

We spoke to them about internships and work that they had produced for clients whilst at the studio.

Most interns are current university students, as in Amsterdam students have a few months off for internships. Interns are paid 250 Euros a month. Paying any more means the studio have to do lots of paperwork and pay tax. Working in Amsterdam is expensive as the city is so confined. Rent is extremely expensive unless you stay far away in the North of Amsterdam.

I wasn't looking for an internship there myself as I didn't think that the work suited me, so we didn't speak about my work, but Joe spoke about his work and was offered an internship there if he wants to take one on next year, which was really good!

Although the studio wasn't really for me, it was good to visit a studio in another country to see how their work differs from British design, and also get to understand more about the work ethic in Amsterdam. The visit was insightful and helped with my confidence when speaking to professionals.
